Targeted drone attacks are a new form of organized crime in the Sonoran Desert, confirmed the representative of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), Francisco Sergio Méndez, commenting that two cases have been reported in Caborca.

“There has been one case, two cases. They are being dealt with, they are being looked at. That is what they are doing now, it is not a minor thing; but our public security forces are there, they are looking at the issue, they are monitoring the air where those drones are flying 24 hours a day, but they are working on it,” Méndez told the press.

The official insisted that it is a “new modality” of several criminal groups that operate in this entity and that they are specifically investigating “who they are.”

“There is a mix of groups, each one fighting over their own issue, but it is becoming clear,” he added.

He acknowledged that what is happening in the area where several criminal cells are fighting for control and manufacturing their own explosive weapons is no small matter.

The violence in the desert region has terrified the inhabitants of Santa Ana, Altar, Caborca, Sáric, Atil, Tubutama, Oquitoa, Pitiquito, Trincheras, Sonoyta and San Luis Río Colorado. These municipalities are part of a cross-border corridor.

Military attacks occur frequently as a result of the escalation of hostilities between organized crime cartels, causing collateral damage to people, homes and infrastructure. The federal official said that these violent actions, where highly damaging weapons are used, are being addressed.

Last March, Mexico’s Secretary of National Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, reported that organized crime has increased its use of drones to attack members of the armed forces and civilians or to dispute spaces with other gangs.
