Dangerous Driving Case: Adjournment After Child Death

by Mark Thompson

Mullingar Circuit Court has again adjourned the case of a 45-year-old man facing charges related to the death of his six-year-old daughter, Hana Meshkat. It’s a gut-wrenching situation, and the legal process is proving painstakingly slow—but necessary, it seems, to get to the bottom of what happened.

Crash Data Analysis Delays Trial

The trial, stemming from a motorway crash in February 2024, hinges on a forensic engineering report.

  • Dr. Babak Meshkat, 45, is accused of dangerous driving causing death.
  • Hana Meshkat, 6, died nine days after a crash on February 8, 2024.
  • An independent expert is analyzing the car’s crash data.
  • The case was adjourned until February 12.

What exactly are the charges against Dr. Meshkat? He is accused of dangerous driving causing the death of his daughter, Hana Meshkat. The case centers around a collision that occurred on February 8, 2024, on the eastbound lane of the motorway between Junction 4, Tyrellspass, and Junction 3, Rochfortbridge.

Doctor Babak Meshkat of An Cimín Mór, Cappagh Road, Galway, was sent forward for trial after being charged last year. Lawyers informed the court in June of last year that they would be engaging an independent expert to analyze the vehicle’s crash data before a plea is entered. The State had previously provided a 120-page report from a garda inspection to Mr. Meshkat’s legal team.

During a hearing on %%current_date_time%%, Mullingar Circuit Court learned that the forensic engineer’s report is expected to be completed within three weeks. Judge Keenan Johnson subsequently adjourned the case until February 12.

Hana Meshkat sustained severe injuries in the February 8th crash and tragically passed away nine days later at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) hospital at Temple Street in Dublin.

The investigation continues as authorities seek a clearer understanding of the events leading to this devastating loss. The delay underscores the complexity of reconstructing the accident and ensuring a fair legal process.
