Daniel Helldén Wins Green Party Mouthpiece Battle by One Vote

In a closely contested battle, Daniel Helldén emerged victorious in the mouthpiece election at the Green Party congress in Örebro. With a margin of just one vote, Helldén won the support of the party members to become the new male spokesperson.

Gustav Fridolin, who previously held the same post and had supported the challenger Magnus P Wåhlin, expressed his pride in the party’s open and democratic process.

“The next step for Daniel Helldén is to continue as he has done during the mouthpiece process,” Fridolin said, emphasizing Helldén’s efforts to engage with party members across the country.

Despite the close race and the divided support, Fridolin does not see any risk of division within the party. He believes that the strategic discussion during the election process has strengthened the Green Party and will make it more resilient.

Åsa Romson, a former spokesperson, did not express surprise at Helldén’s victory. She highlighted the intensive discussion within the party about political direction and competence and expressed confidence in the selection committee’s proposal.

Per Bolund, who had also stepped down as spokesperson, emphasized the importance of listening to those in the party who did not get their way. He acknowledged the need for the new mouthpieces and party leadership to consider all voices within the party.

Romson praised Helldén as a well-proven politician but noted the challenges of transitioning from municipal to national politics. She stated that Helldén still has much to learn in his new role.

As the Congress concluded, Bolund admitted feeling both excitement and apprehension about the transition. He acknowledged the uncertainty of his future but expressed optimism about the party’s prospects.

The close and intense mouthpiece election has highlighted the commitment to democratic processes and the importance of unity within the Green Party. Despite the split support, party members are hopeful that the new leadership will bring the party together and guide it towards a successful future.
