Chancellor Gabriela Sommerfeld and Minister of the Interior Mónica Palencia were awarded the National Order of theTo the Merit“, in the Degree of Grand Cross.
President Daniel Noboa awarded this Thursday, July 25, 2024, the decoration to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabriela Sommerfeld, and the Minister of the Interior, Mónica Palencia, whom the opposition in the National Assembly seeks to remove via impeachment.
Sommerfeld and Palencia were awarded the National Order of Merit, in the Grade of Grand Cross. This took place within the framework of the solemn session organized by the Executive in Guayaquil, on the occasion of the 489th anniversary of the founding of the city, which was not attended by the authorities of Parliament.
Executive Decree 340 justifies this decoration and states that Sommerfeld “has managed to inspire respect and spread values in the international community” in the exercise of his position, and also highlights his career in private companies.
“Mrs. Sommerfeld has shown clear signs of leadership, vision and total dedication to the service of the country” and “has demonstrated her ability and professionalism in order to strengthen bilateral relations, promote regional security, position Ecuador in the multilateral arena and effectively manage international cooperation, always safeguarding the highest national interests.”
The awarding of the decoration to the Chancellor coincided with a session of the Assembly’s Oversight Committee, where the official was to attend to defend herself against the impeachment being promoted by Correa’s supporters for the police raid on the Mexican Embassy on April 5 to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas.
In relation to Palencia, Decree 339 states that she “has fulfilled her duties with dedication, with the aim of achieving the greater good of safeguarding and protecting the lives of Ecuadorians.”
The Correismo is also promoting an impeachment against Palencia for alleged failure to fulfill his duties in the face of the security crisis that Ecuador is experiencing.
For their part, legislators from the Citizen Revolution accompanied their fellow member, the mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Alvarez, in another solemn session on the occasion of this date. Alvarez did not refer to the raids by the Attorney General’s Office on a company belonging to his family for alleged fuel smuggling, denounced by the Government.
