Noboa’s campaign showed a moderate right-wing facade and, after the first round, even adopted a speech with social democratic tones. The candidate linked to the agroindustry also “hid” his vice president, who posted videos filled with neo-fascist speeches on social networks such as Instagram and TikTok.

The assassination of one of the right-wing presidential candidates, Fernando Villavicencio, on August 9, 2023, shortly before the first round, completely altered the electoral scenario and contributed – together with his good performance in the debate – to Noboa’s impressive rise, which displaced two other candidates and placed him in the second round. He is seen as the leadership that represents youth and the new.

Although investigations into the crime state that there is no evidence linking González’s campaign and his party with the suspects in Villavicencio’s death, several chains were launched on social media spreading fake news with this content.
