Alfonso Zambrano Pasquel, Danilo Carrera’s new lawyer, said that there is no way to prove that the audio recordings of Leonardo Cortázar presented by La Posta are true, which is why he asked for his exclusion from the Encuentro case.
Following the reinstatement of the preparatory hearing for the Encuentro case, the defense of Danilo Carrera, brother-in-law of former President Guillermo Lasso, announced the next steps it will take.
The hearing will continue next Monday, July 22, 2024. Alfonso Zambrano Pasquel, Carrera’s lawyer, announced that he will request that everything related to the publications made by the digital platform La Posta not be considered in the criminal proceedings, since their veracity cannot be verified.
Zambrano explained that the investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office included broadcasts from La Posta, in which an audio was presented that supposedly belongs to Leonardo Cortázar, also investigated in the Encuentro case. In said leaked audio, Cortázar speaks of a criminal corruption structure allegedly headed by Danilo Carrera.
However, Zambrano said that the veracity of the audio cannot be verified. He explained that in his versions, Anderson Boscán, director of La Posta, said that the audio that was presented was edited, and that the original version was on a flash drive that he destroyed.
According to Zambrano, Cortázar also denied in his version in the Encuentro case that the voice in that audio is his own and denied even knowing Danilo Carrera personally. For this reason, for the lawyer, nothing related to this La Posta publication can be included as evidence in the trial.
Danilo Carrera is being investigated for allegedly leading an organized crime group that sought to obtain undue economic benefits, taking advantage of his close political position, to interfere in public institutions such as:
CNEL EP, BanEcuador and the National Customs Service. Originally, 10 people were under investigation in the case, but three of them (Roberto Bueno, Julio César León and Jorge Orbe) received a dismissal from the prosecution.
Danilo Carrera is under house arrest. According to his defense, his health is stable, although he has had medical interventions for a heart condition.
