Title: Uber CEO Expresses Surprise at High Fare for Short Ride, Defends Increasing Prices

In a recent interview with Wired, Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, expressed surprise when he learned that a journalist paid $51.69 for a three-mile ride to Uber’s annual product event in New York. Khosrowshahi, who has been at the helm of Uber for six years and oversaw significant price increases, was taken aback by the cost of the ride.

When asked to estimate the cost of the journey, Khosrowshahi initially put it at “20 bucks.” However, the journalist revealed that if the ride had been taken a few minutes earlier, it would have cost $70. Khosrowshahi attributed the higher fare to surge pricing and inflation.

“Everything is more expensive. Inflation has become a part of our everyday life. With Uber, the vast majority of your fare is going to your driver,” Khosrowshahi explained. He also highlighted that earnings for Uber drivers have increased by 40 to 50% over the past four years, reflecting the rising costs of time and labor.

Wired noted that Uber’s prices have reportedly risen four times faster than the rate of inflation as the company strives to become profitable. In the past, Uber has subsidized cheaper prices using investors’ funds.

Earlier this year, research by the UCLA Labor Center revealed that while drivers’ earnings may have increased in New York City, Uber seemed to benefit the most. The study found that Uber and Lyft took a larger share of passenger fares while giving a smaller percentage to drivers compared to previous years.

Despite the scrutiny over rising prices, Uber announced its first quarterly operating profit on Tuesday. However, the company’s shares fell after Khosrowshahi warned that Lyft, a major competitor, was engaging in price competition.

As Uber faces questions regarding its pricing strategy and its impact on drivers, the company continues to emphasize the need to balance driver earnings and passenger affordability. Khosrowshahi’s defense of Uber’s pricing policies reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to navigate the challenges of the ride-hailing industry while striving for profitability.
