The victory of the men’s handball team in the Central American and Caribbean Games, San Salvador 2023, after concluding the group stage undefeated and defeating the Dominican Republic in the final of the contest, was not less than expected.
And as in any successful team, the performance of each of its members defines the results. One of the Central American champions is Daril Lois González Pedro from Artemisa, who wears number 44 on his back.
At 21 years old, Daril comes from a sporting family, where the inspiration for muscle activity is born in the womb.
“My parents were my coaches since preschool in the #2 Francisco “Chito” Quicutis sports team. They themselves had practiced this discipline ”, so that the boy defined his future from a very young age.
For Daril, the strategy to win the gold consisted of studying the opponent, both in matches inside and outside the area. “Some of us did it through videos; We already knew others, because we played in the qualifying event, heading to San Salvador.
“The Emerging Nations Championship in Bulgaria was also very useful, in which we met quality European countries, such as Great Britain and Cyprus, and also achieved victory.”
Daril joined the national team in March of the previous year. His ability on the field was appreciated by members and coaches of the cast, during the first edition of the Tribute Cup to Alfredo Quintana, held at the Mariposa in the Ciudad Deportiva, in Havana, although the boy already stood out in the squad of the Artemisa team .
His return to the Homeland became a manifestation of joy. His family and friends welcomed this boy who enjoys playing basketball and soccer so much in his free time, and going out to parties with his friends.
But already on July 31st the preparation for the Pan American Games begins in Santiago de Chile, a new challenge for this young group of champions, who make Cuba proud in various scenarios.
