DARMSTADT – (red). For more than 25 years, the “Darmstädter Tafel” association has been implementing the Tafel idea in the city area: collecting food that would otherwise be destroyed and distributing it to economically and socially disadvantaged people. However, due to the consequences of inflation and the war in Ukraine, the Darmstädter Tafel is also confronted with increased burdens. The Darmstadt food bank is currently receiving fewer donations of non-perishable food from retailers, reports Gert Wentrup, the association’s chairman. “Therefore, I would like to ask the citizens of Darmstadt: Come by our place at Bismarckstraße 100 and donate rice, pasta, flour, sugar, oil and any kind of canned goods to us.”

“We supply 500 to 600 customers with groceries every week. In addition, we offer 50 to 60 people a warm lunch every day during the week, which our volunteers prepare,” summarizes the chairman of the Tafel. In addition to food and donations in kind, financial support is also a mainstay for the work of the Darmstädter Tafel. For example, the Vonovia housing association recently donated 2,000 euros. “A great help to cope with the rapidly increasing costs and to enable the additional food supply for 150 Ukrainian refugees,” says Gert Wentrup happily.
