Dart spacecraft to asteroid; Elon Musk says revenge for dinosaurs

by time news

NaThe Chanel Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) was launched on Wednesday. The test is to see if the spacecraft can knock down an asteroid and change direction. NASA’s spacecraft has launched the Falcon 9 spacecraft of SpaceX, owned by billionaire businessman Elon Musk.

Elon Musk shared a tweet on Thursday congratulating NASA on the project. He tweeted that it was revenge for the dinosaurs.

It is said that the extinction of all the dinosaurs that existed on Earth about 6.5 million years ago was due to the collision of a large asteroid with the Earth.

Scientists are examining whether future asteroids could be deflected by defenses, with the thought that such an event could happen again.

Anyway, Musk’s tweet has already been picked up by fans. One of the comments was like a war cry ‘for the dinosaurs’ (for dinosaurs).

Some have described the venture as the sequel to the old Hollywood movie Armageddon.

Dart is a spacecraft that weighs 610 kilograms. The launch was from the Vandenberg Space Force Center in California.

Two asteroids that do not pose a threat to Earth have been selected for the experiment. The Dart spacecraft will crash into the 163-meter-diameter Moonlet asteroid Dimorphus. The spacecraft orbits the asteroid Didymus, which is 780 meters in diameter. Scientists believe that Dimorphus could be moved closer to Didimos by the impact of the thunder. The spacecraft will reach these asteroids between September 26 and October 1, 2022.
