The decision on the Energy Efficiency Act is pending in the Bundestag. If things go as planned, data centers in Germany will soon no longer be feasible, according to the operators.

After their meeting with representatives of the data center industry, Frankfurt’s city politicians want to adapt the planned guidelines for the construction and development of new data centers in an “internal city deliberation and voting process” and then present them to the factions in the city parliament. The leading environmental department of the FAZ did not give a more precise timetable.

After the operators themselves, the Frankfurt Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) also advocates that the considerations and, above all, the further exchange with the companies concerned should lead to changes in the draft. “In their current version, the city’s guidelines would weaken the business location as a result of investment-friendly companies migrating and relocating to other regions,” warns IHK President Ulrich Caspar in a statement on the draft. He continues to wonder whether Frankfurt really wants climate protection and whether it wants to remain the digitization capital of the EU. After all, the consistent use of digital applications could result in significant carbon savings. But this requires additional data centers.
