DECRYPTION – Failing to obtain a ransom, hackers published very sensitive data of citizens of a Breton town.
Bank identity statements, tax notices, rent receipts and other supporting documents delivered to pasture on the darknet… Nearly half of the 12,000 citizens of the small Breton town of Betton have known since Monday that some of their data very sensitive personal data, which they notably had to provide for registrations at the canteen or leisure center, are at the mercy of cybercriminals.
Victim of a ransomware attack at the end of August, the town hall refused to pay the $100,000 demanded by the criminal group Medusa. To put pressure on their victim, and perhaps send a message to other targets, around 22,000 data files have already been published. Others are likely to follow. As of Tuesday afternoon, they had already been downloaded more than 3,500 times. “Approximately 2% of all Betton town data has been exfiltrated,” recognizes the town hall.
