Paramount Skydance chief executive David Ellison is retaining Mark Thompson as CNN chief following the roughly $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, bypassing speculation that CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss would take over the cable network when the deal closes on October 6, 2026.
The decision to keep Thompson at the helm of CNN provides immediate stability as the network prepares to transition under its new corporate umbrella.
Mark Thompson Pledges Editorial Independence
Addressing employees ahead of the formal merger closing, Thompson expressed confidence in the incoming leadership team’s commitment to journalistic standards. Previously, Thompson served as director-general of the BBC for eight years and as president and CEO of the New York Times from 2012 to 2020, where he oversaw the publication’s successful transformation into a dominant digital news product.
“First, I’m convinced that from David Ellison on down, Paramount Skydance leadership really does believe in news alongside entertainment as a top strategic opportunity for our new company,”
Mark Thompson, chair and chief executive of CNN
Thompson also acknowledged internal tensions regarding the ownership shift, noting in his memo that I know many of you have had trepidations about this moment. That’s understandable – indeed, as I’ve hinted before, I’ve had the odd moment or two myself!
As reported by the Guardian, staff relief was palpable following weeks of rumors that the new owners might install external leadership, with a CNN producer at the company’s Atlanta headquarters remarking, “That sound you hear is a giant sigh of relief from halls of Techwood.”
Bari Weiss Remains at CBS News Amid Leadership Unveiling
While speculation had mounted among insiders that Bari Weiss might take over the larger cable news operation, Paramount Skydance confirmed that she will remain in her current post as editor-in-chief of CBS News. Alongside Ellison, the leadership team includes Ynon Kreiz as co-CEO and Andy Gordon serving as president of the new company.
The decision keeps the two news divisions distinct while the company integrates. Observers note that CNN and CBS News maintain vastly different broadcasting models, with Paramount’s chief legal officer Makan Delrahim noting at an industry conference that CBS News constitutes a handful of hours of programming while CNN operates 24-7. Most of CNN is not unionized.
Antitrust Settlement Mandates Independent Oversight Board
According to reporting compiled on the merger, the oversight committee is charged with monitoring adherence to journalistic independence from corporate owners and shareholders.

Thompson Drives Digital Expansion Amid Financial Pressures
Beyond editorial governance, Thompson faces immediate financial pressures. Filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission indicated earlier this year that CNN was projected to generate $1.8 billion in revenue and $600 million in profit for the 2026 fiscal year, with longer-term estimates pointing toward $2.2 billion in revenue and $700 million in profit by 2030.
Thompson has spent his tenure driving digital expansion, including the rollout of the CNN All Access subscription streaming service designed to capture audiences outside traditional cable bundles. With the parent company facing substantial debt loads that could climb past $80 billion, the incoming management team must balance continued digital investments against traditional broadcast contraction.
