The professor of Columbia University in the USA will be awarded an honorary doctorate of the Pedagogical Department of Kindergarten Teachers of the School of Educational Sciences of the University of Ioannina. David Guralnick, in a ceremony that will take place on Wednesday, July 10, at 7:30 pm, in the “Georgios Mylonas” Ceremony Hall of the University of Ioannina.


David Guralnick is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of e-learning and the use of technology in education and professional performance, with over 30 years of experience. He is the creator of the first learning simulation through learning-by-doing. He designed the e-learning method “Watch, Rate, and Compare”, which has been used in more than 200 courses and was awarded in 2012 the Comenius Award of the Society for Pedagogy and Information in Germany. He has designed other e-learning tools for use by educators, including the award-winning Encompass™ E-Learning Toolkit, and has promoted e-learning research by linking it with practice, founding The Learning Ideas Conference and chairing the International E -Learning Association (IELA).
David Guralnick graduated in 1988 from Ohio State University, USA with majors in Computer Science and Mathematics. In 1995 he received a Doctorate (Ph.D.) from Northwestern University in the USA with the title of his doctoral thesis, “An Authoring Tool for Procedural-Task Training”, while from 1994 until today he has received many awards in the field of Electronic Learning Design.
Among other things, he has been awarded by Brandon Hall with the Gold Award for the best use of video in learning (Best Use of Video in Learning, Kaleidoscope Learning) in collaboration with the Practicing Law Institute, for the course “Motivated Reasoning and Legal Ethics” in 2019 and for the course “The Art & Science of Interviewing Pro Bono Clients” in 2016. He has received the Award of Outstanding Achievement from ACLEA, (Association for Continuing Legal Education) in collaboration with the Practicing Law Institute, for the course “Working with Survivors of Domestic Violence” in 2018, and many more.
He has authored many scientific papers, books and delivered lectures as an invited speaker at many conferences and seminars in the US and other countries.
The ceremony will begin with an address by the rector of the University of Ioannina, Anna K. Batistatou, and will be followed by the praise of Polyxeni E. Paghe, who was honored by the dean of the School of Educational Sciences, and the reading of the texts of the Department’s resolution, the announcement and the doctoral diploma by president of the Pedagogical Department of Kindergarten teachers Charilaos K. Zaraga. Afterwards, the dean of the Faculty of Education Polyxeni E. Paghe will dress the recipient with the tibenno of the University of Ioannina and the dean of the University, Anna K. Batistatou, will present the titles. The ceremony will conclude with a speech by the honoree on “Online Learning: A Potential Future” (in English) and a musical program by Mariam Pleura, a student of the Department of Philology.
