David Raya Shines as Arsenal and Atalanta Battle to Scoreless Draw in Champions League Opener

by time news

David Raya was the main protagonist of the 0-0 draw between Atalanta and Arsenal, this Thursday (19), in the debut of both teams in the league phase of the Champions League, in Bergamo, Italy.

In the second half, the Spanish goalkeeper of Arsenal saved a penalty taken by the Brazilian Éderson and struck by the Italian-Argentine Retegui. Not satisfied, he also tipped over Retegui’s header from the rebound, right on the line.

The reflex save was the highlight of a match that was more about fighting than playing. Each team had only two big chances to score, according to Sofascore, with Atalanta having a slight advantage in ball possession (55%).

Besides Éderson on the Italian team, the trio of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Magalhães from Arsenal rounded out the list of Brazilians in the match in Bergamo, but none of them stood out in the 0-0 draw.

Table Situation and Upcoming Matches

With the draw, Arsenal and Atalanta finish the first round of the Champions League in the middle of the table — in 17th and 18th places, respectively.

The Londoners will play a big match against PSG at the Emirates Stadium in the next round on October 1st. Before that, on Sunday (22), they face another tough challenge, this time in the Premier League: away to Manchester City.

As for Atalanta, they will face Shakhtar Donetsk in a “neutral field” for the second round of the Champions League on 10/2. Due to the war in Ukraine, the Ukrainian team will host the match in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
