THE Stefanos Tsitsipas took the first step in Greece’s promotion to Davis Cup World Group 1 after beating Romanian Marcus Copil 2-0 sets (6-3, 6-4) in front of around 3,000 spectators at Ano Liosia and making the 1- 0 in Greece’s tie with Romania.

The Romanian also threatened in the 2nd game of the 2nd set, but Tsitsipas was outstanding. In the first six games, the two athletes went “hand in hand”, with the Greek champion making the break in the 7th and taking a 4-3 lead. In fact, he served successfully and closed the set and the match 6-4 (2-0) after 77 minutes.

Tsitsipas: “I play for the team, not for myself”

Stefanos Tsitsipas, at the press conference after the game with Kopil for the Davis Cup, emphasized that his motivation to play well is the National team.

“I know in these games that I play for the team and not for myself. This is a motivation, playing for the new guys in my team as well. It’s a great honor for me,” he said.

When asked about the crowd’s support for his opponent’s break points, he replied: “I got passionate. People always help at home games. It is an asset in all sports and in Davis Cup. As a team we were more connected in the away games and not so connected in the home games. We worked on this and we have a good atmosphere.”
