Bad news from the auto industry weighed on the Dax on Thursday. In addition, there was a slide in the price of Sartorius shares. The leading German index lost 0.62 percent to 15,795.97 points. This put the 16,000 counter a little out of reach, which the market players had recently been looking at again and again. The MDax of the 50 medium-sized stocks lost 0.52 percent to 27,747.97 points.

According to stock marketers, the laboratory specialist Sartorius had disappointed across the board with the report for the first quarter. As the clear Dax taillight, the shares fell by 10.7 percent to their lowest level since January. In their wake, the shares of Merck KGaA lost 1.7 percent. The Darmstadt-based company is also active in the laboratory business. Shares in the dialysis provider Fresenius Medical Care lost 1.8 percent in the MDax.

In addition, the carmaker Tesla had disappointed with its quarterly figures. Analysts criticized the unexpectedly weak profitability, which was the focus of the market. Investors steered clear of the automotive sector across Europe: in Germany, share price losses for Porsche AG, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Continental ranged from 2.6 to 4.1 percent. The car titles also weighed heavily on the Dax.

Among the small caps, the shares of Ceconomy, the parent company of Mediamarkt and Saturn, rose by a good five percent and thus took the lead in the SDax small cap index. They benefited from positive analyst commentary.

The EuroStoxx 50, the leading index in the euro zone, closed 0.20 percent lower at 4384.86 points. France’s Cac 40 also posted modest losses, while Britain’s FTSE 100 edged slightly higher. In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial fell slightly at the European close.

The course of the euro rose: The European Central Bank set the reference rate at 1.0944 (Wednesday: 1.0933) dollars. The dollar thus cost 0.9137 (0.9147) euros.

On the bond market, the current yield fell from 2.54 percent on the previous day to 2.52 percent. The Rex pension index gained 0.30 percent to 125.11 points. The Bund future rose by 0.41 percent to 134.06 points. (dpa)
