The vice president of the Cádiz Press Association (APC), Mabel Caballero, who organizes the event with the support of the Miami-based Inter-American Press Association (SIP), told EFE on Monday that the event will serve to meet better the moment that Spanish is going through in the American media.

“We want to know if Spanish is advancing or regressing among the new generations” of Latinos, Caballero stressed about the event that will open with a first panel entitled Has journalism in Spanish achieved acceptance and recognition by the US public and press?

The panel will be directed by the executive director of the IAPA, Ricardo Trotti.

The conference, which is a continuation of the International Congress of the Spanish Language that has just been held in Cádiz (Spain) from March 27 to 30, also includes the panel Adaptation of traditional US Spanish-language media to digital changes. Will they come out stronger or lose strength?

“Journalism is the most real way and close to reality to take the pulse of Spanish in the United States,” he said.

He said that “taking that pulse and seeing how Spanish is doing” is the opportunity offered by the first of the two panels, in which the president of Univision News, Leopoldo Gómez, and the director of CNN en Español, Cynthia Hudson, will participate.

The list of participants is completed by Armando Varela, editorial director of The opinion of the Angels; Sonia Osorio, journalist from The New Heraldfrom Miami, and Florida International University (FIU) Professor of Journalism Alejandro Alvarado Bremer.

Caballero stressed that the presence of strong media “is a guarantee for democracy” and that, without a doubt, their contribution of quality helps to strengthen the Spanish language in the United States.

Tuesday’s conference follows those of the same type recently organized by the Cádiz Press Association in the Moroccan cities of Tangier and Tetuán, in addition to the parallel to the IX International Congress of the Spanish Language that took place from March 27 to 30. in Cadiz.
