Interesting: There were official days of penance even in ancient times. Throughout the history of Christianity, days of repentance and prayer have always been scheduled for current reasons. Especially in times of need and danger, the entire population was called upon to repent and pray.

At the end of the 19th century there was a general day of repentance and prayer on the Wednesday before Eternal Sunday. This is the last Sunday of the church year. The day of repentance and prayer always occurs eleven days before the first Sunday of Advent or on the Wednesday before November 23rd.

Since the day of repentance and prayer is intended to stimulate reflection, it is considered a day of rest with a ban on dancing.

Why the Day of Penance and Prayer is only a public holiday in Saxony

After reunification, the day of repentance and prayer was even a public holiday for four years from 1990 to 1994. In 1995, the day of repentance and prayer was abolished as a public holiday to finance long-term care insurance in all federal states – except in Saxony. They can still look forward to a day off.

No rule without exception: Bavaria and Berlin have special regulations for students. All students in Bavaria have this day off. For many working parents, this means having to organize childcare for their children – or taking a day off.

Teachers have no lessons on the day of repentance and prayer, but are not off duty. On the day of repentance and prayer, they usually attend training courses or have educational days.

In Berlin, only Protestant students are allowed to decide whether they want to go to school or stay at home.
