Daylight Savings Time Ends: Clocks to Fall Back One Hour on October 27

by time news

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport announced that the change of time will occur on the last Sunday of the month, specifically on October 27, when citizens will turn back the clocks to show 03:00 (from 04:00).

The related announcement

“We remind you that on Sunday, October 27, 2024, the application of the daylight saving time measure ends, according to Directive 2000/84 of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU from 19/01/2001, regarding provisions for daylight saving time. The clocks should be set back one hour, that is, from 04:00 a.m. to 03:00 a.m.,” states the announcement from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

Why does the time change

The time change began to enable energy savings. Scientific studies show that during the seven months of daylight saving time, we save 210 hours of electricity, taking advantage of the power of the Sun. The measure was primarily adopted in the 1970s, amid the oil crisis, when most European countries were trying to utilize daylight to save energy.

Since 1996, a unified, pan-European regulation has been in effect, whereby in the spring we set the clocks one hour ahead (to take advantage of daylight for one additional hour), while in the autumn we set them back one hour. The European Union decided to stop the mandatory time change in 2021, allowing each member state to independently choose to make daylight saving or standard time permanent. However, this measure has been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine. In Greece, the relevant consultation has been postponed indefinitely.
