The Bundesliga game between FC Bayern and VfL Wolfsburg will be a particularly emotional affair for Alex Schlüter – for very specific reasons.
He struggled for words several times, swallowed deeply, and started again and again – for DAZN presenter Alex Schlüter, FC Bayern’s Bundesliga game against VfL Wolfsburg became an emotional moment. For the 39-year-old, the game was the last appearance for the streaming service, for which he had been in front of the camera since 2016 and whose face he was.
At the end of the broadcast after Bayern’s game against Wolfsburg, Schlüter was officially bid farewell – and burst into tears. “We have now listed everything: table, results, what is important on matchday 33, and now we come to something completely different,” said commentator Marco Hagemann, who joined Schlüter and expert Tobias Schweinsteiger on the pitch. “Dear Alex, you are leaving us. Today was your last game, and I have to tell you: It is a great honor to have been able to accompany you on your last game at DAZN.”
Then Hagemann spoke to the audience: “I can tell you: This is a fat guy who is super unpretentious, who is down-to-earth, who hasn’t taken himself too seriously over the years, who has brought incredible input and creativity to the store .” Schlüter was already visibly touched, Hagemann continued: “That’s extraordinary, it was always a really big exchange with you. Please stay that way. I wish you all the best on behalf of our colleagues.” Then the commentator repeated himself and joked: “Please stay as you are. If not, you’ll really get one. You know that, right? Thank you for being there and all the best.”
Schlüter stood there speechless, then a clip produced especially for the outgoing presenter was played, with excerpts from his years at DAZN and comments from expert Sebastian Kneißl. Schlüter already had tears in his eyes. When the live image was switched back to after the clip, the two-meter man said with a broken voice and long pauses: “And I wanted to stay cool, I idiot…”, had to pause again, kept taking deep breaths, sobbing.
Then Schlüter was brief and said: “Thank you.” Then I had to take a breath again. “No shit now: It’s been a long ride. The fact that Seb Kneißl is sitting down there, that you’re standing here, that makes me really happy. And sorry to everyone who I’ve annoyed over the years with annoying questions and suggestions in long, far too long editorial meetings. I think I owe you some lunch breaks. But that was really fun.”
According to information from t-online, Schlüter is switching to competitor Amazon Prime next season. However, confirmation is still pending.
