Chanting “We want ICE off our streets,” hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night, expressing grief and anger after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed a Minneapolis woman.
Demonstrations Erupt Following Minneapolis Shooting
Protests have spread across the country after an ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis, sparking outrage and calls for accountability.
- The shooting of Renee Good on Wednesday ignited protests in Minneapolis and Washington, D.C.
- Demonstrators are calling for the arrest of the ICE agent involved, identified as Jonathan Ross.
- Videos appear to contradict claims by Trump administration officials that Good attempted to run over the agent.
- The FBI is currently investigating the incident.
- Similar protests occurred in Portland, Oregon, following a separate shooting involving a Border Patrol agent.
The demonstration on Thursday briefly shut down 14th and U streets in Northwest D.C. Protesters then walked just over a mile to the White House, where they chanted for approximately 15 minutes near the north lawn before dispersing.
The killing of Renee Good on Wednesday set off protests in Minneapolis and spurred people to demonstrate outside the ICE headquarters in D.C. that night. A larger demonstration cropped up on Thursday, with protesters holding signs reading, “Justice for Renee Good,” “Jail killer ICE agents” and “ICE out of D.C.”
Trump administration officials initially accused Good of trying to run over the ICE agent. However, videos show Good driving with officers near her SUV but contradict President Donald Trump’s claim that Good “viciously ran over” the officer. The FBI is investigating the deadly clash.
“She should be with us,” one protester said, their voice thick with emotion. “But instead, she was gunned down in cold blood.”
Rhea Biswas, with the Party of Socialism and Liberation, which helped organize the protest, called for the arrest of the ICE agent, identified as Jonathan Ross. “We’re seeing Democratic governors and politicians like Tim Walz and Jacob Frey call for an end to ICE in their cities. That’s not enough, right? He killed her. It was cold-blooded murder. He needs to be in prison tomorrow,” Biswas stated.
Protests erupted across the nation after the Minneapolis shooting and news that a Border Patrol agent shot two people in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday. More rallies are expected in D.C. over the weekend.
