Dungeons & Dragons’ Artificer class Gets a Major Overhaul in ‘Eberron: Forge of teh Artificer’
Table of Contents
The latest Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook, Eberron: Forge of the artificer, arriving on shelves December 9, promises a significant power boost and streamlined mechanics for the often-underestimated artificer class, solidifying its role as a versatile and inventive force within the game.
For many D&D players, the Artificer represents the ultimate “Jack of all trades.” while the Bard is often described with that same moniker, the artificer truly embodies the spirit – and masters one trade above all others: the creation of magical items. Depending on the chosen subclass, Artificers can seamlessly fill any role in a party, from frontline fighter and support tank to ranged spellcaster.
Eberron: Forge of the Artificer is described as an extensive supplement to 2019’s Eberron: rising from the Last War, expanding upon nearly every facet of the Eberron setting. This includes updated character species, new feats and Dragonmarks, deeper lore surrounding the Last War,a wealth of fresh magic items, and a comprehensive set of rules for airships and mobile bases. While ideally used in conjunction with its predecessor, the new sourcebook offers enough standalone content to justify purchase even for those who don’t own Rising from the Last War.
A Class Redefined for 2024
The most impactful change brought by Forge of the Artificer is the update to the Artificer class itself, aligning it with the 2024 fifth-edition refresh. This overhaul isn’t merely cosmetic; it fundamentally alters how Artificers interact with the game’s magical systems.
One key change is the replacement of Magical Tinkering with Tinker’s Magic, a first-level ability that dramatically expands the Artificer’s early-game utility. The 2019 version allowed for the creation of a single, limited magical trinket.Tinker’s Magic, though, allows the Artificer to create a variety of temporary magical effects, such as enhancing weapon attacks, providing minor healing, or creating simple illusions. Furthermore, the Flash of Genius ability now allows Artificers to reroll an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw – even after the initial roll is made, even if it initially fails. At level 14, the use of Flash of Genius is replenished with a short rest, further enhancing its reliability.
Each existing Artificer subclass – Alchemist, Armorer, Artillerist, and Battle Smith – receives smoother progression updates, making the class stronger at lower levels. A new subclass, the Cartographer, is also introduced.
A Look at the Subclasses
The Alchemist excels at creating potions for buffing and healing, while the Armorer allows players to embody the spirit of Iron Man with extensive customization options. The battle Smith functions as a defensive frontline support, accompanied by a customizable Steel Defender companion – a robotic pet with solid stats and immunities.
the Cartographer utilizes magical maps for battlefield control, opening portals for teleportation and supplementing their kit with healing, support, and offensive spells, alongside a Homunculus Servant.
The Artillerist,a personal favorite among many players, remains the “big boom” specialist. Forge of the Artificer refines the subclass, allowing the Eldritch Cannon to cycle through its three effects – flamethrower, force ballista, and temporary hitpoints – on a single turn.
The power Fantasy Realized
The updates to the Artificer class are a direct response to player feedback and a desire to fully realize the class’s potential. As D&D Lead Designer Jeremy Crawford onc stated, “Masters of unlocking magic in everyday objects, Artificers are the supreme inventors… The Artificer always has the right tool for the job. if they don’t, give them a bit of time, and they’ll make it.”
That power fantasy – the ability to create and adapt – is now more fully realized than ever before. According to Crawford, even seemingly outlandish ideas, like strapping an Eldritch Cannon to a Warforged Fighter, are perfectly legal within the game’s rules. With Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, the Artificer class is poised to become a truly dominant force in the world of dungeons & Dragons.
