The European Union is working on a ‘legal framework’ through which the money can actually be confiscated and given to Ukraine, De Croo recalls. But lawyers still see all sorts of objections to this. De Croo thinks it is moral to explain that Belgium is taking money from wealthy Russians, since it is Russia that is causing the destruction in Ukraine.
Zelensky says he can use anything in terms of financial support. “Our schools have been destroyed, our universities, our power grid, our infrastructure. We need money for recovery.’ He does point out that, according to the World Bank, about 400 billion euros is needed for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
