Following other social platforms, YouTube has also introduced short videos in portrait format. We explain what you have to do if you want to deactivate these “shorts”.

They became popular through TikTok, and later found their way onto Instagram, Facebook and YouTube: short mini videos in portrait format that are particularly popular on smartphones. However, this video format is not suitable for every user. You can find out here what options you have to deactivate the so-called shorts on YouTube.

YouTube does not intend to deactivate the shorts

Shorts on YouTube cannot be completely deactivated, neither in the kids version aimed at children nor in the standard version. The streaming service provider has fully integrated the new video format into its platform and created a separate tab for it within the application. Anyone who accesses it will only find shorts there.

What can definitely be deactivated is the display of shorts on the main YouTube page if you access the web application on your PC with a web browser such as Chrome or Firefox. The short videos appear in a bar that can be closed using the “X” on the right at the level of the “Shorts” heading. However, this doesn’t last forever: after 30 days, the shorts will reappear there until you hide them again.

Disable YouTube Shorts with third-party apps

If you want to disable the Shorts feature on your iPhone or Android phone, installing an alternative YouTube app is required. This is possible, for example, with ReVanced or DailyTube. Both apps are available in the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. However, the alternatives are only in English.

Note: When installing apps from unknown sources, be aware that there are security risks involved. There are quite a few fakes of the YouTube clients mentioned on the internet. There is a great risk of infecting the smartphone with malware. Therefore, take a close look and be critical.

Check comments and reviews carefully. The experiences of other users can help you make a decision for or against downloading. If the possible risks outweigh the benefits or you have doubts, it is better to avoid third-party apps.
