The writer and producer who changed the face of television in the 1980s has passed away following complications from a series of infections

American screenwriter and producer David Jacobs, creator of the highly successful soap operas Dallas and California, has died at the age of 84 at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California. The announcement of his death, which took place on Sunday 20 August, was given by his son Aaron to «The Hollywood Reporter», specifying that his father had battled Alzheimer’s disease over the years and died of complications due to a series of infections.

“Dallas” in its original version ran for 14 seasons and 357 episodes on the American network CBS, beginning as a five-part miniseries in April 1978 before concluding in May 1991, and was the show no. 1 in the Nielsen ratings after the fourth, fifth and seventh seasons. Meanwhile, the spin-off “Knots Landing” debuted in December 1979, also on CBS, and ran for 14 seasons — and 344 episodes — a solid staple of the Thursday evening through May 1993.

Based on his work as story editor on the ABC series “Look at Lawrence” (1976-80), Jacobs signed a contract with Lorimar Productions, where he befriended Michael Filerman, a young program development executive TV. From their meeting, «Dallas» was born with Larry Hagman in the role of the oilman JR Ewing, of which Jacobs signed the entire first two seasons. Jacobs remained, however, a creative consultant to “Dallas” throughout the run of the series. For CBS, Jacobs also co-created “Paradise,” a three-season western (1988-91), and created “Four Corners,” which ran for five episodes in 1998. He also executive produced “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” (1993) and “Homefront”, earning two Emmy nominations in 1991-92 for his work. As a screenwriter David Jacobs has also signed episodes of the TV series “Kazinski”, “The Lazarus Syndrome”, “The Secrets of Midland Heights” and “Shannon”.
