Deadline Approaches for Social Household Electricity Tariff Applications: Major Discounts Available for Eligible Households

by time news

With the expiration of the deadline for submitting tax declarations for the incomes of 2023 on August 2, the period for submitting applications for the granting of the Social Household Tariff (KOT) for electricity for the next twelve months has begun.

The KOT is lower by 4.5-7.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (depending on the category of the beneficiary) compared to the regular tariff of the respective provider, thus ensuring a significant discount for those who are eligible.

The deadline for submitting applications ends one month after the expiration of the tax declaration submission period, that is, this year on September 2. Below are useful information for beneficiaries, the procedures, and the conditions for granting the KOT.

A. There are two categories of beneficiaries:

  1. a. Those who meet the conditions for granting the Social Solidarity Income fall under KOT A’.
  2. b. Those who meet the following conditions fall under KOT B’:

i. They have an annual total actual or deemed income, up to the limits of the table we publish.

  • For a household that includes a person or persons with a disability of sixty-seven percent (67%) and above, the income limits increase by 8,000 euros.
  • For a household that includes a person or persons who require mechanical support using medical devices, which is provided at home and is essential for their life, the income limits increase by 15,000 euros.
  • For each additional adult member, an amount of 4,500 euros is added, and for each additional minor member, an amount of 2,250 euros is added, up to a total limit of 31,500 euros regardless of the number of household members. This specific upper limit (31,500 €) increases by 8,000 euros for a household including a person or persons with a disability of sixty-seven percent (67%) and above and by 15,000 euros for a household including a person or persons who require mechanical support with the use of medical devices that are provided at home and are essential for their life.

ii. They and the members of the household do not own real estate in Greece or abroad, with a total taxable value of up to 120,000 euros for a single-member household, increasing by 15,000 euros for each additional member and up to a maximum limit of 180,000 euros.

iii. The members of the household do not fall under the provisions of the luxury tax and do not declare living expenses for yacht crew salaries, tuition fees at private schools, and for domestic helpers, car drivers, teachers, and other staff.

B. The application for inclusion in the KOT is submitted every year in order to re-evaluate the inclusion conditions. Applications are submitted electronically through the IDIKA system, by the person required to submit the income tax declaration of the household or their spouse, with the necessary condition that the electricity supply is already in the name of the obligor or their spouse. Each household receives the KOT only for the supply to their primary residence.

C. The KOT is applied to the total quarterly consumption and up to the corresponding limits set for each category of beneficiaries as follows:

  • Single-member household 1,400 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with two adult members or a single-parent family with one minor member 1,600 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with two adult members and one minor member or a single-parent family with two minor members 1,700 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with three adult members or two adult and two minor members or a single-parent family with three minor members 1,800 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with three adult and one minor member or two adult and three minor members or a single-parent family with four minor members 1,900 kilowatt-hours
  • Household with four adult members or two adult and four minor members or a single-parent family with five minor members 2,000 kilowatt-hours.

For consumption less than 200 kWh per four months, no KOT discount is calculated.

D. For a household that includes a person or persons with a disability of 67% and above, the above consumption limits increase by 300 kWh.

  • For a household that includes a person or persons who require mechanical support using medical devices, which is provided at home and is essential for their life, the above consumption limits increase by 600 kWh.
  • For each additional adult member, a consumption of 200 kWh is added, and for each additional minor member, a consumption of 100 kWh is added, up to a total limit of 2,400 kWh regardless of the number of household members. This specific upper limit (2,400 kWh) increases by 300 kWh for a household that includes a person and persons with a disability of 67% and above and by 600 kWh for a household that includes a person or persons who require mechanical support using medical devices, which is provided at home and is essential for their life.

E. The discount is 4.5 cents per kilowatt-hour for beneficiaries of KOT B’ and 7.5 cents for KOT A’. It is applied to the charge for daytime consumption or nighttime consumption if the consumer has a nighttime tariff.
