Valve released a massive update for its invite-only MOBA hero shooter Deadlock on Tuesday, introducing a New York City map, six new characters, and a comprehensive engine upgrade. The release propelled the game to a record-breaking concurrent peak of over 228,000 players on Steam.
City Never Sleeps Update Overhauls Map and Introduces Six New Heroes
Valve deployed its second major overhaul for Deadlock on Tuesday, delivering a sweeping transformation to the game’s battlegrounds and roster. Titled City Never Sleeps, the update turns the game’s setting into a stylized, early-to-mid 20th-century New York City atmosphere split across distinct visual themes. Alongside the map rework, Valve introduced six new characters: Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba, and Violet. These additions bring distinct visual styles and mechanics, ranging from a needle-wielding nurse and a floating chess master to a crowned rodent and a cozy old witch accompanied by pigeons. Players can vote in-game on which of the new heroes rolls out first, with the first characters debuting on Friday. As with previous hero drops, the new heroes can be voted on from within the game, and there is a now a double hero vote for your first win of the day. Voting takes place in the pre-game lobby, where you can argue about who to vote for with your teammates.
Player Counts Surge Past 228,000 Concurrent Users on Steam
The arrival of the patch triggered an immediate surge in engagement. According to data from SteamDB, player counts climbed past 228,000 concurrent users shortly after the update went live, marking an all-time peak for the title. IGN reported that the game climbed to the sixth most-played spot on Steam overnight, surpassing its previous record of 171,490 players set in September 2024.
This milestone is particularly notable because Deadlock remains in early alpha testing and requires an invite from an existing playtester to access. Fans across social media reported taking time off work to experience the update on patch day, pushing the unannounced game to the upper tier of Steam’s most-played charts alongside established live-service titles.
Engine Upgrades, Map Districts, and Quality-of-Life Additions
Beyond the primary map lanes, the update restructures the battlefield into four distinct districts: the Theater District, Chinatown, the Haunted Lot District, and the Plaza District. Each area features unique neutral creatures, officially known as Haunts, replacing previous creeps with inventive entities such as spectral library creatures, stage-hand marionettes, and disembodied hands in jars.

Technical refinements accompany the visual overhaul. IGN noted that Valve updated the engine code to the latest version of Source 2, improving anti-cheat measures, prediction performance, rendering, and audio. The update also delivers over 10,000 new non-ping voice lines paired with a dedicated dialogue player, bolder health bars, a clearer kill feed, intuitive shop filters, expanded custom bot tools, and new accessibility options.
Development Progress and Future Scope Additions
Alongside the patch notes, Valve issued a progress report on the game’s overall trajectory.
“we felt that there was still a good amount of work we wanted to do on the core game itself before we moved onto more polish phases of the game development (like updating older hero artwork).”

The developers are working on progression and hero or hideout customizations to gather feedback before an official release. They are also testing speculative additions, including large item redesigns and alternate game modes that expand the scope of the game. Future updates will target Midboss layouts, Guardians, and Walkers, while broader hero remodels are scheduled for later in the process. Valve has not announced a release date, release window, or timeline for public beta access.
