“Deadpool & Wolverine”: This movie shows where the problem with the Marvel Universe is

WIf you mean something really bad about the Marvel studio, you would describe their movie and series universe as a common subscription trap. Each film builds on the previous ones. If you want to be fully informed about what thirteen dozen spandex heroes are scattered across the various worlds, you still have to watch the series that is sometimes not enjoyed on the unannounced streaming service Disney Plus.

Even die-hard fans seem to have less and less interest in it. Since the billion-dollar successes of the Avengers series, the franchise has not produced any box office hits. Nine-figure production costs force a commercial orientation that robs movies of any charm. Anyone who plays it safe produces formalistic boredom – in recent years, increasingly with political messages that are unstructured and just plain annoying.

Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds offers a refreshing alternative with his Deadpool movies – a dialectical counterpart to the Avengers, so to speak. Swearing wild, killing brutally and breaking the fourth wall, Deadpool becomes the politically incorrect hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In fact, the first film about a professional who has already passed without virtues or flaws – but often with just words on his lips – became a cult classic.

With a low budget and humor under the belt, Marvel showed with Deadpool in 2016 that it can still make fun of itself – at a time when the franchise has reached its peak. The second part from 2018 – with the gifted young actor Julian Dennison as a sidekick – is also convincing.

But almost everything that fans love Deadpool for can be seen in vain in the third part. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a cramped, oversized and boring regular entryway into the Marvel Universe.

About the plot: At the end of the credits of the last film, Deadpool has brought his dead girlfriend back to life and is celebrating her birthday when a multi-millionaire manager tells him that his life is doomed because Wolverine’s “individual leader” died there.

Wolverine? Yes, literally, the knife-knuckle hero of the X-Men, who died a heroic death in “Logan” – needs to be brought back. So there is another mechanism of destruction. Of course you jump through many dimensions again – it’s as confusing as you might suspect after reading this paragraph.

So Wolverine and Deadpool fight their way through the crowd – and the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is working hard. They fight in Honda minivans (the fight scenes are amazing), joke about rape scandals in the Boy Scouts and otherwise teach each other. Gossip Girl Deadpool cracks jokes when Wolverine fillets her with his claws. It is not important, the changes of the two protagonists ensure that their injuries are restored in a matter of seconds.

The consequences of the lack of consequences

That was already the case in the past films – but the fight scenes with no consequences show well what a problem the entire Marvel universe and, above all, the Disney company behind it is. Nothing means anything if the dead character is always resurrected in an adventurous way or brought in from another heaven.

Every emotional farewell can be reflected again in the end credits. The infinity of worlds and worlds produced digitally does not get identified with anything that happens on the screen.

Deadpool unfortunately lost his girlfriend. His grief and his desire to die drive the plot of the second part. But regardless, the Marvel writers let him travel in time to recover. And then in the new movie they send across the multiverse – just like Spider-Man before him – to give all the veteran heroes of Marvel rights in a mini-appearance.

This elicited at least a few surprised “ahs” and “ohs” from the audience. Anyone who wants cameos from forgotten Marvel characters (including the original cast) will get their money’s worth in the new Deadpool movie.

But of course every fan knows that there is no creative idea behind the revival of the most famous X-Men Wolverine, but rather the noise of signing money in the ears of a Marvel manager – in the desperate hope of making the franchise that has ended in profit. again.

It doesn’t help much that the movie itself makes fun of it – while offering the same canned plot as other Marvel movies. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is an answer to fan criticism that no one needs. A lighter film, made on a lower budget, would have been a more satisfying answer.

Deadpool is charming when he’s also giving love advice to taxi drivers, running over bad guys with an ice cream machine while laughing, and the final fight takes place at no cost in the harbor. Instead, for the umpteenth time, the fate of everything is at stake. As always. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a regular Marvel movie.

At least one thing gives hope. The next film is not immediately announced in the credits.
