A young Chinese student, enrolled at the national art school of Bourges (Cher) and suspected of having made anti-Semitic tags in the city, was placed in an administrative detention center in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) last Monday, according to information from our colleagues at Berry Republican.

The Cher prefecture requires his expulsion from the territory. More precisely, she asks the court to withdraw the young man’s residence permit, to order an obligation to leave the territory, as well as a ban on entry for a period of three years.

Case closed without further action

However, the Bourges public prosecutor’s office closed the case without further action, reports France Bleu Berry. The prefecture speaks of “consequent” tags as well as an “anti-Semitic fresco”, discovered in mid-October in the streets of Bourges. These graffiti follow the bombing of the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza by the Israeli army.

The prefecture emphasizes that the detention of the Chinese student has no link with the decision taken by the Bourges public prosecutor’s office, and explains that it has taken “necessary sanctions within the framework of the protection of public order, in accordance with to the instructions of the Ministry of the Interior in the current context.

Since the start of the war between Hamas and Israel, following the Islamist group’s terrorist attacks on October 7, France has faced a rise in anti-Semitism. The Ministry of the Interior Gérald Darmanin has to date recorded 1,518 anti-Semitic acts since the start of the conflict. This figure is more than three times higher than the number of anti-Semitic acts or remarks recorded (436) over the whole of 2022.

600 people were arrested, of which “120 to 130” were foreigners. Around fifty of them were placed in administrative detention centers before possible expulsion, according to Gérald Darmanin.
