Yesterday, Wednesday, a tragic traffic accident occurred on the desert road in the city of Derna, east of the country, resulting in the death and injury of a number of Egyptian citizens.

According to the Masrawy website, “The overturning of a truck carrying 26 Egyptian migrants, who were trying to cross illegally, led to the death of 11 of them, and the injury of 15 others, including those in critical condition.”

According to Al-Wasat newspaper, the Derna branch of the Ambulance and Emergency Department said that it “received a report of the bus overturning while traveling on the Tamimi desert road,” noting that “the injured were transferred to receive treatment in the cities of Al-Bayda and Benghazi.”

He added: “There are two critical cases in the intensive care unit at Al Wahda Hospital.”

The investigation authorities revealed that the truck driver, an Egyptian national, was arrested and detained.

In turn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs announced that it is “following up on the car accident that occurred in the city of Derna.”

The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdel Aati, directed the Egyptian Consulate General in Benghazi to “closely follow up on the incident and communicate with the concerned Libyan authorities in this regard, to provide care for the injured and ensure the rapid transfer of the bodies to the homeland, as soon as the necessary procedures are completed.”
