A baby Sumatran elephant has died after being trapped in an elephant pit created by poachers in Indonesia.
It is said that the herd of elephants that came with the baby left the old baby elephant in a dangerous condition.
The baby elephant was found by the villagers of Ache Jaya and taken to the camp of the local elephant protection organization.
To save the cub that was with the wounds, half of its trunk was surgically removed. However, doctors say the wound spread to other parts of the body and died two days later.
“We were not able to save the injury because it was so severe,” said Agas Ariando, head of the Ache Jaya Natural Resources Conservation Agency.
“We did our best to help,” he said.
Due to the rate of rapid deforestation of the natural habitats of elephants in Borneo and Sumatra, the Sumatran elephants that inhabited them are considered to be the most endangered species.
Male elephants are especially targeted by poachers here. This is because the ivory of this type of elephant is expensive. These ivory are sold in the illegal ivory market.
The death of this baby elephant is considered to be the most recent death in a series of deaths of elephants targeted for hunting. Earlier in July this year, a large elephant was beheaded and its tusks stolen.
