The Spaniard, who made his professional debut at Deportivo La Coruña, played for Barcelona for seven seasons, winning two Spanish league titles, two Spanish Cups and the Ballon d’Or (1960), beating Ferenk Puskás in the final vote.
He also played in Italy between 1961 and 1973 at Inter and Sampdoria. With the Nerazzurri he won three Italian championships and two European Cups. He ended his football career at Sampdoria, before becoming a coach.
At international level, he was European champion with Spain in 1964. He was capped 32 times and scored 13 goals.
Between 1980 and 1988 he was the coach of the Spanish Under-21 team, with which he won the first European title in this category for the Iberian country.
Then, between 1988 and 1991, he was coach of the senior national team, leading La Roja to the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
