At La Verrière (Yvelines), Héricourt (Haute-Saône), Bourgoin-Jallieu (Isère)… these are the same images of desolation. During the nights of violence that have followed since Wednesday, June 28, many schools have been burned or degraded in France by the rioters. Scenes that aroused the consternation and anger of the inhabitants of these often working-class neighborhoods.

According to the counts established by the Ministry of National Education this Sunday, 210 schools suffered fires and damage (garbage can fires, destruction or attempted break-ins). Classes of course, but also teachers’ rooms and administrative offices were damaged or even completely destroyed.

A peak overnight from Thursday to Friday

The night from Thursday to Friday saw a peak in violence, since 117 schools were targeted throughout the territory. The previous night, 50 establishments experienced damage against 33 between Friday and Saturday, and “only” 10 on the night of Saturday to Sunday.

As a result, this Monday morning, a week before the end of classes, a dozen schools will not be able to open their doors and welcome their students. In Héricourt, for example, the Louise-Michel kindergarten, targeted by a fire, will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. Children whose parents work will be welcomed at the neighboring elementary school.

At La Verrière, where a kindergarten and an elementary school went up in smoke, 200 students remain on the floor, while the city will have to work to repair the buildings during the summer. In other localities, it is the leisure centers that will take over, for lack of anything better. The Ministry of Education refuses for the moment to provide an estimate of the cost of these degradations. On the other hand, it encourages staff who have had to confine themselves to avoid being injured to file a complaint as soon as they have been attacked.
