He had led Total for more than 15 years. Business leader Thierry Desmarest died Tuesday at the age of 78, said the TotalEnergies group, confirming information from the world.
A polytechnician who joined Total in 1981, he was CEO of the group from 1995 to 2007. He then took over as president until 2010, a position he again held on an interim basis for a few months after the death in 2014 of Christophe de Margerie.
The group – which was still called Total – had become one of the world’s leading oil companies under his presidency. But his mandate also remains marked by disasters, such as the sinking of the Erika in 1999 or the explosion of the AZF factory in Toulouse two years later.
Thierry Desmarest had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for several years, according to Le Monde.
