The speech lasted barely a minute. Every word was weighed. This afternoon of November 28, at the opening of the session, Yaël Braun-Pivet, the president of the National Assembly, spoke seriously. “On the night of November 18 to 19, she begins, A tragedy has occurred which mourns and shocks our entire country, plunging each of us into infinite sadness. Thomas, 16, was stabbed to death. (…) An outbreak of violence has plunged a French commune into horror and I want to express, in the name of national representation, our solidarity of heart and spirit in the face of this tragedy. » Before inviting MEPs to observe a minute of silence, she underlines that“it is important that justice be done and justice is neither revenge nor vindictiveness”. All elected officials stand up. The moment of contemplation seems consensual. At least in appearance.

The very morning of November 28, Emmanuelle Anthoine, the deputy (Les Républicains) for the fourth constituency of Drôme – where Crépol, the village of the drama is located –, was on a train between Valence and Paris when she learned of Yaël’s decision. Braun-Pivet. She feels a mixture of relief and regret. “I said to myself: “Finally!” It should have taken place a little earlier, this minute of silence. » The MP had “very bad experience” the fact that that for Nahel, killed by a police officer at the end of June, was decided ” as fast “, the day after his death.

A week earlier, on November 21, during questions to the government, Emmanuelle Anthoine regretted the absence of a tribute paid to the young man in the National Assembly and sent a message of support to the family. His colleagues stood up to applaud for a long time. The Minister of Justice, Eric Dupond-Moretti, immediately welcomed his “sense of measure”, and agreed: “The life taken from this 16-year-old kid clearly deserved a moment of silence and contemplation. » Then added: “However, it was a moment of controversy which immediately replaced it. »

“A democracy of emotion”

In a letter addressed to the President of the National Assembly, three days later, Eric Ciotti, boss of the Republicans, returned to the charge and asked, “with gravity”, a minute of silence, in view of the“immense emotion within a people who cannot get used to the recurrence of so much violence”. It will ultimately take the same request, formulated this time by the boss of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly, Sylvain Maillard, for Yaël Braun-Pivet to consent. Letting the idea of a Parisian power insensitive to the tragedies shaking the countryside take hold was far too politically risky. And too bad if a few elected officials on the left deplore, off the record, “a democracy of emotion”.
