Among the athletes under threat is windsurfing gold medalist Tom Rivney. He said, ‘I think there should be no politics in sports, especially in the Olympic Games. The sad thing is, here too (Olympic) politics is involved. I have received many messages and threats.’
Earlier, Palestinian swimmer Valerie Taraji spoke about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He said, ‘Everyone sees the lives of the people of Palestine now as just a number, it is a matter of suffering. They see everything as a number.’
He also said that he wants to live in peace in his native land, ‘As athletes, we are like the other ten. We want to fight. As humans we also have life. Like everyone else, we want to stay in our homes.’
More than 40,000 people have lost their lives so far in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza. The damage is beyond measure. The situation is becoming increasingly dire. However, no ceasefire has been decided between Israel and Hamas.
