Death toll crosses 37,000; Extraordinary stories of survival in the last hours

Istanbul ∙ A week after the devastating earthquake, many people were pulled out alive from the ruins of buildings in Turkey. Teams from different countries, including the NDRF team from India, are searching for life in the collapsed buildings.

Rescue workers are desperately trying to rescue those who are still alive inside a collapsed 3-story building in the disaster-ravaged town of Karmanmarash. An elderly woman, her daughter and an infant are buried under the debris.

A 6-year-old girl, Mirai, who was trapped in the rubble of a building in Adiyaman town yesterday, was brought out alive. Efforts are on to save the girl’s sister. A 13-year-old was also rescued in Hatay province.

Although it is a relief to have been able to save lives in many places, hopes are fading as the time that humans can survive without food and water is running out. Rescue workers are working hard to rescue as many people as possible as quickly as possible. Due to shortage of rescue workers and equipment, it is not possible to save everyone.

India’s Romeo and Juliet in search of life

∙ Dogs Romeo and Juliet of the Dog Squad, a part of India’s NDRF team, have been commended for their efforts to wade through the rubble in search of life. They finally rescued a 6-year-old girl named Beren in the town of Gaziantep. Union Minister Amit Shah appreciated the work of the NDRF team.

As more bodies were recovered, the death toll crossed 37,000. 31,700 deaths were confirmed in Turkey and 5,700 in Syria. According to the United Nations, 8.7 million people are starving in Turkey and Syria. According to the World Health Organization, the earthquake affected 2.6 crore people.

Vijayakumar’s body was cremated

The body of Uttarakhand native Vijayakumar Goud, who died in the Turkey earthquake, was brought to Delhi. The body was received by relatives and cremated at Kotdwar in Puri district. Vijayakumar, who was an employee of Bengaluru company, was sent to Turkey by the company.
