Death toll rises to 10 in Italy floods

Flooding caused by heavy rains in the mountainous region of central-eastern Italy. The death toll in the rains has reached 10. Many people are reported to be missing. Dozens of people escaped from the lightning flood by climbing on the roofs of houses and trees.

The rain caused heavy damage in the Marche region near the Adriatic Sea. Mayor Ricardo Pasqualini said more than 1,300 Barbara residents were affected by the flood. “A mother and daughter who tried to escape from the flood went missing. Elsewhere in the town, the boy was rescued from his mother’s arms. It was not a water bomb, but a tsunami” – Ricardo added.

300 firemen have been deployed for the rescue mission. Heavy rains started in the area from the evening of September 15. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mario Draghi told a press conference in Rome that 10 people had died and four were missing in the floods. He thanked the rescue workers for their professionalism, dedication and courage. Officials said that around 50 people were injured and are being treated in hospitals.
