In a session that lasted almost four hours, the debate in the House of Representatives on the project that seeks to ban bullfighting in Colombia was once again postponed due to the lack of a quorum. The discussion, scheduled to begin voting on the articles, was interrupted by a series of challenges, propositions and a protection action.

During Wednesday’s session, various representatives of different political currents intervened in a heated discussion after it became known that a judge had accepted a protection action presented by two bullfighters who requested guarantees for their right to work. This led several representatives to propose postponing the debate, arguing possible acts of malfeasance.

The board of directors decided to postpone the vote, which is now scheduled for next Tuesday, after a series of challenges due to conflicts of interest and the withdrawal of several congressmen dissolved the quorum necessary to continue the discussion. Among the challenges were those of the president of the Chamber, Andrés Calle, accused of receiving government funds to expedite legislative procedures, and that of the representatives of the Historical Pact due to an investigation against President Gustavo Petro for alleged violation of campaign limits.

The representative rapporteur of the project, Alejandro García, expressed his concern about the lack of order in the debate and the need for a discussion based on solid arguments. “Congress must rise to the occasion to have a new culture of peace and animal welfare,” García declared, urging greater impartiality and order in future legislative sessions.
