Former world champion Niklas Kaul has started his race to catch up in the decathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Munich and has moved up from seventh to fourth place after the 110 meter hurdles.

The 24-year-old from Mainz crossed the finish line in 14.45 seconds and has 5101 points after six disciplines – and a medal in sight. The Swiss Simon Ehammer extended his lead after the best hurdle sprint in 13.75 seconds with 5668 points.

Abele’s protest successful

After a successful protest against the disqualification due to false starts over 110 meter hurdles by Arthur Abele from Ulm, the defending champion was able to continue participating in the decathlon. As the German Athletics Association announced, the 36-year-old was allowed to run over the hurdles again alone. The decision became known when Abele took part in the non-competitive discus throw.

The former world championship third-placed Kai Kazmirek from Neuwied was also able to improve in the intermediate classification with a hurdle time of 14.42 seconds. He moved up two positions to sixth. Tim Nowak from Ulm was unable to compete in the 400 meters due to circulatory problems and is no longer in the competition. (dpa)
