The dramatic event happened on Monday, June 12. “Due to an uninvited visitor who damaged the electric fence at one of the enclosures in the evening, the entire troop of crested macaques escaped,” the zoo then described the incident on its website.

Employees managed to capture several animals, but others fled off the premises. The last macaque was caught almost a week later. The employees of Bistro nad ferrata, Sandra and Vendula, had the presence of mind to lure the monkey to the cellar, where they locked him up for a watermelon.

About half an hour after the animals ran away, the suspect was located. A plainclothes policeman drew attention to a person at a nearby restaurant on Pastýřská stěna. Detectives subsequently detained a forty-two-year-old possible perpetrator. The test for the presence of drugs in his body came out with a positive result for THC.

Police spokeswoman Eliška Kubíčková has now informed that they have launched a criminal prosecution against a man who should have damaged a fence in June with the aim of releasing monkeys into the wild. In addition, he also allegedly damaged the door of the restaurant.

“The police commissioner accused the man of committing the offense of damage to another’s property in the stage of an attempt and a completed deed. Criminal prosecutions are conducted at large. If found guilty in court, the accused may face a prison sentence of up to one year,” said Kubíčková.
