Declaration of the Union of Cuban Journalists

Without any morals to even comment on Cuba, sectors of the extreme right within the European Parliament, with the marked objective of making noise and hindering the Cuban presence at the CELAC-EU Summit, have approved an anti-Cuban resolution. The document is a dirty and rusty copy of others that have appeared every time European countries and Cuba have voted for dialogue and a policy of non-interference.

The same quick characters return, more to respond to the orders of the United States, than to that of the EU itself, which sustains its relations with our country, in political dialogue and collaboration.

The hackneyed issue of human rights —so systematically violated in many European countries— is once again being used by those who should have been most concerned about what has happened to the protesters who peacefully took to the streets of France to protest the death of a young man by the French police.

And, although they do not deserve the slightest explanation, the suggestion of the Parliament to these gentlemen would be useful, to look into the policies used against immigrants, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, those who have died by the thousands in the attempt to reach rich countries by sea, in fragile boats, which plundered their occupied nations and turned them into colonies.

It would be, at least, to act with a minimum of dignity, if those same representatives of the European right, condemned the presence these days of a US nuclear submarine, in the illegal Guantánamo naval base, converted in recent years, into a center of imprisonment and torture, for those who were considered, due to their physique, as Muslims linked to acts of terror and crime.

It is also shameful that those who claim to be acting in the name of democracy try to torpedo an event like the CELAC-EU Summit, which, at least for Latin American nations, would constitute an important moment to talk about collaboration, non-interference, actions in favor of to act to save the planet from the harmful effects of climate change, among others.

The Union of Cuban Journalists, as part of Cuban civil society, denounces this type of interventionist actions by the European Parliament, and defends the existence of CELAC as part of the much-needed process of Latin American integration.

We condemn with all our might that extreme right-wing political groups try to turn the aforementioned Summit into a miserable circus, with room for sickly clowns, incapable of acting in favor of dialogue, collaboration and solidarity between inhabitants of two regions closely linked by the culture, language and history.
