Due to the prolonged drought, a water regime has been introduced in places in Halkidiki. Authorities are urging tourists and locals to limit water use.

A state of emergency was declared in the municipality of Proponidas in Halkidiki due to a lack of water. Some of the best beaches of Halkidiki belong to the municipality, such as Kalikratia, Mudania, Triglia and others.

The local authorities appealed to residents and tourists to limit their use of water, reports BNR.

Due to the problem of water resources, many tourists in this area either leave early or transfer to other places in Halkidiki where there is no water problem, hoteliers in the area said.

The mayor of the region, Manolis Karas, told the media that for now the state of emergency has been declared for one month, but it will probably be extended.

In Halkidiki, water supplies are running low due to this year’s drought and an overly strong tourist season, locals said.

Farmers also reported problems due to lack of irrigation water.
