Deep Red, a thriller film directed by Dario Argento, follows the adventures of a ruthless serial killer who will commit a series of terrible murders, all accompanied by a little song in the background, sung by the candid voice of a child. It all begins when, during a conference on telepathic and paranormal phenomena, the German psychic Helga Ulmann (Macha Méril) perceives that among the spectators in the room there is a murderer. After confessing her feeling to a colleague of hers, Professor Giordani (Glauco Mauri), the doctor returns home where she is mercilessly slaughtered by the maniac with a meat cleaver.
Witnesses to the murder are Marc Daly (David Hemmings), an English jazz pianist who lives in the same building as Helga, and his friend Carlo (Gabriele Lavia), a depressed and alcoholic man. Immediately after the incident, Commissioner Calcabrini (Eros Pagni) and reporter Gianna Brezzi (Daria Nicolodi) arrive on the scene to immediately begin the investigation. Although suspicions fall on Daly, the man decides to join the journalist and investigate to finally catch the serial killer. This leads him to attract the attention of the killer himself who, one evening, manages to enter his house and, with the usual background music, tries to attack him. His life is saved, however, by a phone call from Gianna who, surprising the maniac, allows Marc to lock himself in another room. The searches become more and more intensive and lead to the discovery of a probable psychological trauma that links the killer to the choral music: his first murder. A series of brutal deaths follow, bringing the man ever closer to the truth. Will Marc be able to discover the true identity of the killer or will he be yet another victim of his ruthless ferocity?
