Deforestation in the Amazon decreased by 66% in July compared to the same period last year, reaching the lowest number for that month in five years, according to data released this Friday (3) by the Lula government, which attributed the results to its policies control in the region.

Last month, deforestation reached 500 km, marking a decrease of 66% compared to the same month of 2022, when it reached 1,487 km, according to data released at a press conference by the ministries of the Environment and Science and Technology.

The July data is based on the surveillance system of the National Institute of Special Research (Inpe) and was celebrated by the authorities, as it was the month in which the dry climate began and, therefore, the high season for destruction of the Amazon biome.

The Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva (Rede), highlighted the “consistent drop” in deforestation and a “virtuous cycle” in the fight against impunity for crimes in the largest tropical forest on the planet.

In the period of one year, deforestation fell 7% until August, with 7,952 km deforested, the lowest value in four years. In the same period between 2021 and 2022, devastation reached 8,590 km, according to official figures.

The data were released days before the summit of presidents of the eight member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), to be held next week in BelĂ©m. It will be the organization’s first summit since 2009.

On the other hand, in the first seven months of the Lula government, between January and July, deforestation fell 42.5% to 3,149 km, against the same period last year.

One of Lula’s government promises to end illegal deforestation in the Amazon by 2030.

However, the area destroyed continued to increase in the Cerrado with 6,359 km devastated in a year until this month, registering the worst annual result since the beginning of the INPE series in 2017.

Between January and July, alerts followed the upward trend, growing 21.7% against this period in 2022, from 4,123 km to 5,019 km. The increase was 26%, to 612 km in July this year compared to July 2022.

In an interview this Thursday morning, Lula repeated his intention to align a policy of control with the Amazonian countries and their security forces against “the organized crime that has taken over many regions” of the forest. And she repeated that her government will be “very tough” in this fight.
