Ddiscover Mozart‘s forgotten idol
Few music lovers know the name of Josef Mysliveček, “the Bohemian” (in the sense of “born in Bohemia”) as he was nicknamed in Italy in the 1750s and 1760s, author of 26 operas and 85 symphonies that the young Mozart admired. The beautiful film by Petr Vaclav, The State comes to repair this injustice. We follow the romantic journey of this exceptional musician born in Prague to a family of millers and who became a composer thanks to the strength of his talent. Fiercely independent, he charted his path in 18th-century Italy without affiliating himself with a court despite the difficulties this entailed… and composed works like this Olympic whose melodic genius dazzles. Accompanied by a remarkable soundtrack (which includes countertenor Philippe Jaroussky), the film happily transports us to the Venice of Pietro Longhi and Francesco Guardi. A success.

Look at Degas in black and white
“If I had to rebuild my life, I would only do black and white,” he said. And we understand this, even if he excelled in color. How beautiful, evocative, mysterious, disturbing, powerful! It is a rarely seen aspect of Degas, master of impressionist, etching and experimental prints, that is shown in the beautiful BNF exhibition orchestrated by Henri Loyrette, former president of the Louvre and world specialist on the painter. One hundred and sixty pieces allow us to follow the artist’s path, from learning black and white to the years of devouring passion for prints and then for photography, through the recurring motifs that fuel his research, obviously women in the bathroom, surprising nudes in their strength, but also other scenes of modern life captured on the spot at the Opera or the café-concert and recreated, from memory, in his workshop by a man who had, says Loyrette, “a predilection for the shadow”.
Degas in black and white. Drawings, prints, photographs. BnF-Richelieu. Until September 3, 2023.

Sharing the happiest of “secrets”
Do you know the Le Secret cabaret? It is one of the wonders of the Parisian night, an intimate place where the strange, poetry, beauty, sensitivity and laughter coexist. A stone’s throw from the Père-Lachaise, in a small and welcoming room, theartists stage their acts, disturbing or cheerful, sulphurous or lyrical, political or moving, often all together. We admire these beautiful nocturnal birds, creatures of silk, sequins, frills, masks, costumes and feathers. Under the guidance of Mr. K., fabulous master of ceremonies, artists and drag queens twirl, sing and dance, the breathtaking Big Bertha with her gentle sway, the sublime Corine and her fatal arrogance, the exquisite David Noir with his petrifying talent, Robi the majestic and her honeyed voice, the statuesque Lalla Death who masters the science of fakirs and many others. They are impertinent, colourful, dazzling timbres, spontaneous gestures, creativity at its peak, emotions that plant themselves in your heart, bursts of laughter that tear you from your insides, in intoxicating music, that, in particular, of L’Bird Pretty on the accordion and the Baroness of the Bronx on violin. At the Cabaret du secret we joke about everything, except talent, freedom, sex appeal, which everyone carries on their shoulders while playing with genres, norms and codes. They can be seen all year round at the Truc du Père-Lachaise in Paris. But don’t miss the apotheosis that will take place this Tuesday 27 June on the stage of the Théâtre de l’Atelier: it is the end-of-year gala of this beautiful team, which promises a beautiful parade of surprises. Hurry to this party!

Hunt the zombie in the heart of Manhattan
The series The walking dead never stops coming back from the dead. After its eleventh and final season, which aired last year, the universe unfolds as a spin-off. One of the most anticipated is The Walking Dead: Dead City. It features two mythical survivors from the series: Negan, the leather-jacketed big bad, once armed with a bat entwined with string, and Maggie, known as “The Widow,” whose husband Glenn was killed by Negan in last episode. of the sixth season. In later seasons, Negan was neutralized by the group of “good guys”, to which Maggie belongs, and regretted it. But the widow never forgave her for killing her dear husband. However, Herschel, the son she was expecting when Glenn was killed, has just been kidnapped by a sordid individual, “The Psychopath”, a former disciple of Negan, at the time of the big bad wolf. The kidnapper took the teenager to Manhattan, where he founded a community modeled on the one led by Negan in his time, fueled by methane obtained by distilling the corpses that populate the island (enjoy your meal!). Only one man can track down the psychopath and bring Herschel back to his family: Negan, who knows all of his former colt’s methods. To redeem himself, he doesn’t hesitate to follow Maggie into this dark labyrinth of collapsed skyscrapers. This grand dance of old backpackers of survival dispenses beautiful beatings, the dirty, the festering, the panting, the emotion, the betrayals. But there is a pleasantly surprising taste for renewal in this work, linked to its way of tending towards thrillers. Negan, who never stops facing his dark side, could have tired us. But, played by the irresistible Jeffrey Dean Morgan, it moves us. The season ends with a solid cliffhanger. Waiting for the sequel!

Fire it up with the new Pixar!
<span class="C
“You’re playing with fire!” », «Go and spread out elsewhere!» » Better not start counting the puns Elementary. The newborn of the Pixar studios, directed by the Korean-American Peter Sohn, presents, in the tradition of Vice versaa love story between fire and water. In Element City, the four elements – fire, water, earth and air – live in perfect harmony. Well, except for the creatures of fire, considered dangerous and relegated to the outskirts. This is where the intrepid Flam lives, waiting for his father to retire to take over the Foyer, the neighborhood grocery store that has become an institution. While trying to tame his eruptive temperament, Flam meets Flack Delamare, an “aquatic” boy, sentimental, funny despite himself, rather a follower at heart. Naturally, their friendship will quickly test the limits of the world they live in and push the boundaries of tolerance. After some difficult years for Pixar (the flop of Buzz Lightyear in 2022, and the release of Magnifico on platforms Soul due to the closure of theaters in full Covid), the studio returns here at its best with this beautiful love story. Halfway between a family saga and a romantic comedy, accompanied by Thomas Newman’s breathtaking soundtrack, the film is both funny and touching. Above all, it is a further step forward for the studio, which continues to innovate by animating its characters constantly. Flam and his companions are therefore flames, in permanent movement, and on the screen it is sublime. Pixar, in its element!
D get burned!” These are just some of the fiery expressions that encapsulate the spirit of Pixar’s latest animated film, Elemental. The film takes audiences on a vibrant journey through a world where fire, water, land, and air are personified as elemental characters who navigate their unique cultures and interactions. Central to the story is Ember, a fiery young woman with a passion for her family’s business, and Wade, a laid-back water-enthusiast whose approach to life is refreshingly fluid.
Directed by Peter Sohn, Elemental promises to be a visual feast, showcasing Pixar’s signature animation style infused with rich storytelling. With themes of belonging, acceptance, and the power of emotions, it’s a film that aims to resonate with both children and adults, reminding us that our differences can unite us rather than divide us.
Catch Elemental in theaters starting June 16, 2023, and prepare to be enchanted by a delightful blend of humor, heart, and stunning visuals that only Pixar can deliver.
