Ramanathapuram: In Ramanathapuram municipality, the district capital, the post of commissioner has been vacant for three months, resulting in delay in tax collection and city development projects. The government should take steps to appoint a new commissioner soon.

Ramanathapuram Municipality has 33 wards. Taxes up to Rs.17 crore should be collected per year on 50,000 residences. The collection of property tax, drinking water, underground sewerage and business tax has decreased by 25 percent in the current year. 157 people are working in the municipality. Temporary employees are also available. Salaries up to Rs.60 lakhs have to be paid to the employees every month.

Municipal administration is struggling with insufficient funds. In this situation, after the completion of the local body elections, Commissioner Chandra went out of town on a long leave. Due to this, the post of commissioner has been vacant for the last 3 months. Karaikudi commissioner Lakshmanan is in additional charge. He also comes and goes once a week.

Due to the absence of a full-time commissioner, there has been a delay in municipal tax collection and city development works including digital library worth Rs. Currently, under the supervision of President Karmegam, the work of digging the drains of Pani Varattu has started. The people insisted that a new commissioner should be immediately appointed to the Ramanathapuram municipality to speed up the implementation of these works.
