Gampam: Due to the delay in getting approval from the minister, the board has lost several crores of rupees without producing 13 lakh units of power at Suruliyar power station in Theni district. The water collected in Meghamalai in this district will be stored in Iravangalar dam through Highways, Manalaru and Venniaru dams here.

A pipeline is constructed at a height of 971 m from the Iravankalaru dam and the water is brought down to the Suruliyar power station in the Vannathipara area to generate electricity. This power station was started in 1978 by the late Chief Minister MGR. It ranks 2nd in Asia in generating electricity by dropping water from a high place.

There is a generator with a capacity of 35 MW power generation imported from Austria. Due to the daily increase in power demand, power generation takes place from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. A production rate of 1 lakh 20 thousand units per hour will produce 4 lakh 80 thousand units per day.

Production in Summer:

Although electricity is generated annually, electricity generation here is also special in summer. The electricity generated here is transported to Gayatharu power station and distributed to other districts. 141 cubic feet of water can be pumped from Iravankalaru Dam to produce 35 MW. But the power plant at Lower Camp would require up to 400 cubic feet of water to produce 35 MW.

Pipe damage

The pipeline broke when water was released from Iravangalar Dam on 4th Sep, 2021. As a result, the power generation was stopped and the Suruliyar power station was closed, so power generation did not take place for 13 months. At least 13 lakh units of electricity generation has been disrupted in 13 months. Even though it has been raining heavily for the past few months, the water has been wasted in the sea. According to the officials,

“The pipe alignment is a big job, so there is a delay in getting approval from the minister. And because welding cannot be done during rainy season, the work could not be started,’ they said. The Tamil Nadu government should take steps to start the work and generate electricity.
