New Delhi: Following the Delhi High Court’s order, the Delhi Police Commissioner has issued a circular asking to avoid using precise Urdu words in charge sheets and FIRs. Along with this, the circular lists 383 words, which are not commonly used in colloquial speech. The circular said that the meaning of these exact words is not known to the people and simple words of Hindi and English can be used in their place.
Generally, while writing FIR, while filing charge sheet and also while filing DD, Urdu-Persian words are used which are not used in colloquial speech. A Public Interest Litigation was filed in the matter in 2018, on which the High Court issued an order on 7 August 2019. It said that an FIR should be registered in the words of the complainant. It should not use too complicated language. The court also said that the police works for the common people and not for those who hold doctorate degrees in Urdu, Persian, English and Hindi. should be done and if someone does not follow them, disciplinary action can be taken against him. The police has also released a list of Urdu and Persian words that were used in FIRs till now.
